There are many things to communicate today. My notes will be brief so if there is need for more information please reply with your questions.

Old Great Road and Connector Road are open again! RIDOT advised today that this maintenance project will continue with repairs on the Route 146 road surface but there should be no impact to traffic on the roadway below. There certainly is reason to doubt RIDOT’s forecasts on this project. Though my fingers are crossed, I see no reason to doubt their current position.

On another Old Great Road note, we held a kick off meeting with the engineer who will do the design work for the water line installation on Mechanic Street and Old Great Road. Surveyors will be in the area soon to get base line information needed for the design work.  In mid to late July we should see a drilling company come in to get subsurface information. That will all get put together into specifications and drawings which will first go to state agencies for their approvals. The timeline required for action by the agencies will ultimately determine our ability to get the pipe in the ground in this construction season. Pavement reconstruction will take place next year.

We also had a preconstruction meeting earlier this week with T. Miozzi Inc. who has been awarded the contract for the next round of town roadway reconstruction. While the weather will be a factor in actual start dates, the current plan is to start on Wilks, Carlton and Rainville near and during the week of July 15. That area should be finished during the week of July 22. Great Road and Harkness Road East will be next from July 29 to August 9 followed by Litzen and Lorraine from August 12 to 23. 

Finally, I am disappointed to report that we have hit a roadblock in our effort to demolish the deteriorated old office building at the Stamina Mill. Though the town doesn’t own the property or the building, it has been my interest to remove this blight while the EPA continues its actions on the subsurface remediation at that property. The only bidder from the second round of bids whose demolition price we could afford backed out. After that disappointment, we arranged testing that confirmed asbestos was present in some building materials. Then our Heritage Association asked for time for them to consider having the building dismantled for future reconstruction as part of their assets. The numbers that came back on that idea weren’t favorable. Add the circumstance of our 2019-2020 budget challenges where I have to say there is no chance that added funds can be found for a more expensive demolition, and I have to say we will all be seeing the building in place for a while longer, unless we can get some financial help from RIDEM, EPA or a grant of some kind, all of which we will be pursuing. The issue is stubborn, but we are equally determined!

Senior Services, Inc. has provided services to seniors and adults with disabilities residing in Northern Rhode Island since 1975, in accordance with the Congregate Meal Program financed through a grant with R.I. Department of Elderly Affairs. Senior Services, Inc. provides nutritionally balanced lunches five days a week at our meal sites throughout Northern R.I.

Senior Services, Inc. offers activities, entertainment, computer classes, Alzheimer's Disease Support Groups, and Wellness programs, which include a weekly blood pressure clinic and exercise classes.

Senior Services, Inc. also offers an Adult Day Care Program ("A Home for the Day"), and a Community Information Specialist who can provide information on eligibility for all state and local programs, including RIPAE.
