Connecting Rhode Island: RIPTA Metro Connector Study to Explore Faster, Expanded Transit Access
Public Invited to Share Feedback Through Extended Online Survey and Additional Public Meeting
Providence, Rhode Island – The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) is pleased to announce the addition of a new public meeting in Cranston and the extension of the online survey for the Metro Connector Study. The study aims to assess the potential for light rail and bus rapid transit systems operating on dedicated routes across high-demand corridors in communities such as Cumberland, Cranston, Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, and Warwick.
A recommendation of Rhode Island’s 2020 statewide Transit Master Plan, Transit Forward Rhode Island, this study will explore rapid transit options connecting the communities of Cumberland, Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, Cranston, and Warwick. Based on population and other factors, the demand for transit in this part of the metro Providence region is some of the greatest in New England and on par with major cities in other parts of the United States. RIPTA will examine the potential for light rail and bus rapid transit operating on dedicated routes to provide faster and more reliable service.
SURVEY
We encourage both riders and non-riders to participate in an online survey to share their input. The survey has been extended until October 17, 2024, allowing more time for public feedback. The survey is available in English, Spanish and Portuguese. For those without internet access, the survey can also be completed over the phone by contacting our Customer Service team at 401-784-9500 x2012.
PUBLIC MEETINGS
In addition to the four public meetings last month, RIPTA will hold two public meetings in October.

These public meetings will be accessible to people with disabilities and people with limited English proficiency. RIPTA will provide translation and interpreter services for the deaf and hearing impaired, provided such a request is made at least 72 hours prior to the hearing date. The study is being funded through a $900,000 USDOT grant made available through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability & Equity (RAISE) program, as well as the
Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP) and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).
