Message from Town Administrator

All the details that needed to be done have been accomplished so I can advise today that I will be appointing our own Tim Lafferty to become North Smithfield’s next Chief of Police. It will be with great pride that I administer the oath of office to him at the town council meeting on Monday evening. More detail will be provided at that time, but Tim’s twenty-three years of dedicated service to our community as a Patrolman, Detective, Lieutenant and Captain, the core values he holds for law enforcement, plus the fervent respect he has for his fellow officers and the people of the town that he serves, give me confidence that he will provide the leadership needed to continue the high expectations that we all have for the North Smithfield Police Department. Join us on Monday as we wish Tim well in these new responsibilities.

Another event of importance to our future will take place on Saturday morning, March 7^th, at the Halliwell School property. Council President, Paul Vadenais, and I will be facilitating a conversation to hear recommendations, thoughts or ideas that people of North Smithfield have about the future use of the existing Town Memorial Building (aka Town Hall) and the Halliwell School. We will meet at Halliwell to provide opportunity for everyone to see the current condition of Halliwell beginning at 9:30 AM when buildings will be opened for a walk-through before the discussion which will begin at 10:00 AM in the Halliwell cafetorium. Please give these properties some thought over the next week and join us on March 7th at 9:30 AM to walk the Halliwell property and then talk about the two properties at 10:00 AM.

Don't miss the opportunity to attend a meeting, hosted by the Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, on Wednesday, March 11th, at 9:00 AM at Banneker Industries, 582 Great Road, Suite 101, in North Smithfield with the North Smithfield business leaders (you do not have to be a Chamber member) to learn about current and future development in the town.

Town Administrator, Gary Ezovski, will recap the past year's activity of his administration and will provide insight of what to expect for North Smithfield in 2020 and beyond.

This meeting will also be an opportunity to meet the Chamber's new President/CEO, Liz Catucci, and to network with fellow business leaders. There is no cost to attend, but seating is limited, and registration is necessary - Click here to register.

National Grid Aerial Transmission Inspections

Winter 2020

Please note that National Grid will be conducting a series aerial inspections of sub transmission electric lines in Rhode Island starting Friday, February 14th, and are expected to go through to the end of March (weather dependent).

The inspections require the helicopter to hover over transmission structures as high-resolution photos are taken. The inspections/photos will support engineering analysis of the transmission line structures. These aerial inspections complement the regularly-conducted, ground-level inspections by quickly and efficiently covering National Grid’s sub transmission system, even across rugged and isolated terrain.

The helicopter inspections are conducted by experienced trained personnel using high-powered gyroscopic binoculars and infrared technology. They are particularly interested in signs of wear- on power line conductors and lightning protection devices; damaged or leaning structures; loose or broken guy wires; broken, chipped or cracked insulator equipment and trees leaning toward the lines or into the transmission corridors.

North Smithfield Residents Food Pantry

We currently need volunteers to: 

  -  Help with pickup and delivery of donated food. A regular vehicle will do.  

  - Help on Wednesday and Friday mornings 9:30-10:15 to sort food,

and we need supervisors for those two times.  

   - Help when the food pantry is open the last two Tuesdays of the month 5:30 - 7 pm and the last two Saturdays 10 - 11 am to help with clients and carry bags to clients' cars.  

    - Coordinate the food rescue and distribution program, requires 4-5 hours a week.

An additional drop box for food items is available at the Town Hall during regular business hours.
