Mayor Beauchamp Announces New Tax Amnesty Program for Tangible Property Taxes
WOONSOCKET, R.I.: Woonsocket Mayor Christorpher Beauchamp announced today that, to stimulate the collection of overdue tangible property taxes and/or motor vehicle taxes incurred before the 2025 tax year, the City will offer taxpayers an amnesty program. Under this program, taxpayers can pay the principal amount of their owed tangible or motor vehicle taxes in full without being required to pay any accumulated interest or penalties. The amnesty program will be available for 60 days, starting February 15, 2025, and ending April 15, 2025.
Mayor Beauchamp stated, “This tax amnesty program is for taxpayers who have struggled to pay their tangible property and motor vehicle taxes and have accumulated significant interest charges over the years. Tax amnesty allows them to clean the slate with the City and start fresh.” The Mayor added, “Many of our taxpayers face financial difficulties. This amnesty program provides them with relief, and benefits the City by allowing us to collect taxes we would not have otherwise received."
Beauchamp clarified that participants in the amnesty program must still pay the principal balance on outstanding past-due tangible and/or motor vehicle taxes. Since the accumulated interest and penalties will be waived, the total tax amount owed will decrease.
To be eligible for the interest and penalty waiver on unpaid tangible and/or motor vehicle property taxes incurred before the 2025 tax year, taxpayers must submit a written application to the City's Treasury Office requesting the waiver. This application must include full payment of the overdue principal tax balance. Both the application and payment must be received by April 15, 2025. Please note that waivers of interest and penalties do not apply to tax obligations for the 2025 tax year.
