City Council Regular Meeting - Feb 17 2025

At least six deaths are reported after severe weather slammed a large part of the country on Sunday. A truck driver was killed in Indiana when intense winds blew his semi over, and a tree fell onto to a trailer in Oklahoma, killing one person. In Michigan, three people from the same family were killed when a tree hit their car, and another person died in Indiana when an Amish buggy was flipped over due to heavy winds.        All eyes are on the stock market with President Trump's tariffs looming. On April 2nd, Trump plans to implement reciprocal tariffs on countries that have slapped tariffs on U.S. goods. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nasdaq and S&P 500 have all tumbled after the opening bell rang on Wall Street this morning.        President Trump is not joking about serving for a potential third term. During a phone call with NBC News, Trump was asked about joking multiple times about serving three times, to which he replied that it wasn't a joke, while also claiming he has the "highest poll numbers of any Republican for the last 100 years." He added that there were methods for making it happen.        Special GOP primary elections will be held in Florida tomorrow to fill the U.S. House seats of former representatives Mike Waltz and Matt Gaetz. One of the seats up for grabs is northwest Florida's 1st Congressional District, long represented by Gaetz, who withdrew from consideration to be Trump's attorney general amid allegations of sexual misconduct. The other race is for the 6th Congressional District--a seat that had been held by Waltz, who is now serving as Trump's national security adviser.        Rescue teams in Myanmar are racing against the clock as they continue to search for survivors in the rubble after a massive earthquake rocked the region on Friday. The death toll is believed to be at least 17-hundred. The Southeast Asian nation's ruling military government says hundreds more remain unaccounted for following the magnitude 7.7 quake.        The last two tickets to the NCAA women's basketball Final Four will be punched tonight. First, number one seed Texas will take on two-seed Texas Christian in Birmingham, Alabama, at 7 p.m. Eastern. In the second game, one-seed Southern California will play two-seed UConn in Spokane, Washington, at 9 p.m. Eastern.
