PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT

 

 

There has been a confirmed case of a rabid raccoon in the area of Grange Road in North Smithfield, RI. To safeguard our community, residents must stay informed about cases like these due to the seriousness of rabies infection. Rabies can infect all mammals including people and their pets.

 

Anyone who sees an animal acting unusually is urged to call Animal Control officials. Please follow the guidance below:

 

·Do not approach animals that you do not know. Exercise caution and maintain a safe distance.

 

·  If you have been bitten or scratched by an animal of unknown vaccination history, wash the wound immediately and seek medical attention.

 

· Ensure that your pets have a current rabies vaccination. If your pet is allowed outside, a booster vaccine is strongly recommended. Keep outdoor pets indoors until they receive the booster vaccines.

 

· Do not feed stray or unknown animals including cats and dogs. Avoid any interaction that may result in potential exposure.

 

·  Do not leave trash or food outside unless it is in a trash can with a tight-fitting lid. Prevent attracting wild animals to your property.

 

· If a pet is fed outside, do not leave food out overnight. Minimize the chances of attracting animals that may carry rabies.

 

· If a pet comes in contact with an animal that might be rabid, contact a veterinarian immediately. Seek professional guidance to ensure the well-being of your pet.

Read is accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O'Keefe, with her SUV and leaving him to die outside a house in Canton during a snowstorm in 2022. Read's first trial last year ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury.        United Airlines will soon begin offering Starlink internet service on its regional jets. The airline announced on Monday that it now has FAA approval and the first commercial flight of Starlink equipped aircraft is planned for May. United expects to equip more than 300 planes with the technology by the end of the year.        Forecasters have some bad news for those with seasonal allergies. Pollen counts will be higher than usual across much of the U.S. this year. Most meteorologists are expecting to see pollen counts blowing away historical averages in over three dozen states as warmer weather approaches. The experts say those who suffer from allergies should prepare for an intense allergy season that could linger into autumn.        The women's Final Four field is set. UConn and Texas punched their tickets to the next round with wins on Monday. Next up - UConn will meet UCLA on Friday in Tampa. Texas will take on South Carolina in the other Final Four matchup.
