PRECIOUS BLOOD CEMETERY TOUR

April 17, 2024/Woonsocket, RI

In conjunction with the Rhode Island Historical Cemeteries Awareness and Preservation Weeks, the Woonsocket Historical Society is conducting an historical tour of the Precious Blood Cemetery on Sunday, April 28 at 1:00 pm.    The cemetery is located at the corner of Rathbun Street and Diamond Hill Road.

This is a free tour.  Plan on meeting at the corner at 1:00 at the gated entrance.  The tour is expected to last 1.5 hours.  Plan on wearing comfortable shoes.

With the establishment of Precious Blood Church in Woonsocket in the 1870's, Rev. Charles Dauray recognized the need of a parish cemetery and purchased the land.  Today this is still an active cemetery, however, since 1954 there are no longer any plots available for sale.   There are a little more 23,500 burials, of which only a little more than 59% are marked.

According to the organizers, there are many famous Woonsocket people buried at the cemetery, and many who are not so famous but who have an interesting story. Come hear their stories.

In case of inclement weather, a rain date will be held on Sunday, May 26 at 1:00.

It's the start of another work week and day 27 of the federal government shutdown. More than 700-thousand federal workers have been furloughed while essential workers continue to show up unpaid and that's starting to take a toll on things like air travel. Several ground stops had to be issued Sunday at busy hubs including L.A., Newark and Boston.        President Trump is in Japan today where he met earlier with Emperor Naruhito at Tokyo's Imperial Palace. He'll also be meeting with the country's new prime minister on this latest leg of an Asian trip focused on trade, investment and defense spending. In a BBC interview, Harris was asked about a section of her new book where she discusses the matter. The former VP said she now wonders whether she should have raised concerns at the time.        The three candidates looking to become New York City's next mayor continue to push for votes as Election Day draws closer. Over the weekend, Democrat Zohran Mamdani spoke at a Baptist church about making New York more affordable while independent Andrew Cuomo rallied with supporters, calling Mamdani a socialist and a divider. Republican Curtis Sliwa was campaigning as well, saying he is the only law and order candidate who will bring down crime.        Investigators believe multiple gunmen were involved in a shooting during a homecoming event at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. One person was killed when shots were fired outside the school's International Cultural Center on Saturday night. Six others were wounded but are expected to survive.        Former New York Jets center Nick Mangold died Saturday night of complications from kidney disease. He shared his fight publicly in a social media post earlier this month, revealing at the time that he needed a kidney transplant. Nick Mangold was 41.
