Rep. Felix Receives Committee Assignments

 

STATE HOUSE — Speaker of the House K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick) has appointed Rep. Leonela “Leo” Felix (D-Dist. 61, Pawtucket) to serve on the House Judiciary Committee and the Committee on State Government and Elections.

The Judiciary Committee considers all bills affecting the penal code, judicial system, ethics, open meetings, access to public records and election laws. The House Committee on State Government and Elections is responsible for legislation relating to state affairs, governmental departments and divisions, administrative procedures, open meetings, elections law and constitutional amendments.

Representative Felix was elected to the House in November. She was sworn in on Jan. 5.

 

U.S. personnel are being evacuated from key Middle East bases as President Trump considers taking action against Iran. That's according to multiple reports citing U.S. officials. Trump has warned Iran the U.S. is looking at options for intervening in the crackdown of anti-government protests, and stands "ready to help."        There will be no federal criminal civil rights investigation into the ICE-involved fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis last week. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche made the announcement Tuesday, leaving the investigation solely in the hands of the FBI. The 37-year-old was shot in her vehicle in what federal officials argue was justified self-defense, sparking protests around the country.        Israel and Hamas are moving into the second phase of the Gaza peace plan. That's according to U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff. In a post on X, Witkoff said the plan will now move from ceasefire to demilitarization and reconstruction. He went to say the U.S. expects Hamas to comply fully with its obligations, including the immediate return of the final deceased hostage.        The home of a Washington Post reporter was searched by the FBI in connection to a classified documents probe. According to the outlet, agents seized a phone, two laptop computers and a Garmin watch from the home of reporter Hannah Natanson although she is not the focus of the probe. The search warrant was part of an ongoing investigation into a government contractor.        Civil rights icon Claudette Colvin is dead at age 86. Colvin's 1955 arrest for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated Montgomery bus helped spark the modern civil rights movement. A representative of the Claudette Colvin Legacy Foundation confirmed she died of natural causes in Texas on Tuesday. She was arrested months before Rosa Parks drew national attention for also refusing to give up her seat.        The 2026 iHeartPodcast Awards nominees are out. The winner of the top award will be determined by a fan vote that will take place through February 22nd.
