Governor McKee, Commissioner Infante-Green Recognize Weekly Attendance Leaders

Week of April 8, 2024 
 

PROVIDENCE, RI – Acknowledging the importance of consistent attendance in education and in alignment with the #AttendanceMatters campaign, Governor Dan McKee and Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green are pleased to highlight the top elementary, middle, and high schools with the greatest average weekly attendance as well as elementary and secondary schools with the greatest improvement in weekly attendance.

 

The following schools are Rhode Island’s attendance leaders for the week of April 8, 2024*: 

 

·     Elementary: Ashton Elementary School, Cumberland – 96.3% 

·     Middle: Achievement First Iluminar Mayoral Academy Middle School – 93.7% 

·     High School: Cumberland High School – 95.1%

 

Special recognition is extended to the following schools for demonstrating the most improved average attendance rates from the previous week:  

 

·     Elementary: Stony Lane Elementary School, North Kingstown – 3.9%

·     Middle: Joseph L. McCourt Middle School, Cumberland – 5% 

·     High: Central Falls High School – 5%

 

The Governor and Commissioner express their gratitude and encouragement to all schools in Rhode Island for their ongoing efforts to prioritize attendance and reinforce the value of consistent learning experiences for all students.

Adult film star Stormy Daniels has finished testifying in former President Trump's hush money trial. Trump's attorney accused Daniels of making up a lot of "phony stories about sex," after appearing in over 100-porn films. Daniels said "The sex in the films is very much real," just like what happened to her in the hotel room with Trump during her alleged sexual encounter.       President Biden is saying American weapons have killed Palestinian civilians. On Wednesday, Biden spoke with CNN after the U.S. paused a large shipment of weapons headed to Israel. He said civilians have been killed in Gaza as a consequence of those bombs and other ways in which [Israel] goes after population centers." Biden added that if the Israeli military decides to launch a ground offensive in Rafah, where over a million people have been forced to flee, then the U.S. will not supply them weapons.       Southern states are assessing the aftermath of severe storms that killed three people. Tennessee was slammed with at least four tornadoes on Wednesday, and two deaths were reported, one by a large tornado and one by a falling tree. One person was killed by damaging winds in North Carolina when a tree fell on a car near Charlotte. Forecasters are predicting more severe weather today from East Texas to South Carolina.       More Americans are filing for first time unemployment benefits. The Labor Department reports receiving 231-thousand initial requests in the week ending May 4th. That's more than the 214-thousand most analysts had been expecting and an increase from the previous week's 208-thousand. It's also the highest number reported since last August.       TikTok says it plans to label artificial intelligence-generated content uploaded from certain platforms, starting immediately. The social media company's head of operations and trust and safety told ABC News today that while users and creators are excited about AI, the company also wants to fight misinformation. The platform is using a technology to trace the origin of different kinds of media, likened to a "nutrition label for content."       The NHL's Stanley Cup Playoffs feature two games tonight. In the Eastern Conference, the New York Rangers will take on the Carolina Hurricanes in game three of their series. In the West, the Colorado Avalanche will take on the Stars in Dallas for game two.
