ALERT: Tax season scams are peaking.  So, when you get any email or even a phone call about your taxes, or questions about your W2 from literally anybody, whether you know them or not, pick up the phone and verify with your known, trusted tax preparer that they actually sent you that email. If you send tax information via email, triple-check that the email address you are sending this to is correct and type it in yourself in the "To" field. 

NEVER click on "reply" and attach your tax information, because that reply email address might be spoofed. Want to be 100% safe? Hand-carry your tax info to your preparer and do the tax return in person with them.

Burgers Are Done!

It’s time to start grilling and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) provides the following safety tips while conducting outdoor cooking.

1.     Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.

2.     The grill should be placed at least 10 feet away from the home, deck railings and fences and pulled out from under eaves, and overhanging branches. 

3.     Keep children and pets away from the grilling area.

4.     Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grilling surface and in catch trays below the grill.

5.     Never leave your hot grill unattended.

6.     Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.

CHARCOAL GRILLS:

1.     There are several ways to get charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.

2.     If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.

3.     Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.

4.     There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord approved for outdoor use.

5.     When you are finished grilling, let the coals cool completely before disposing of them into a metal container.

It's time to Sound the Alarm to save lives in Rhode Island! “Sound the Alarm. Save a Life” is a nationwide American Red Cross initiative to install 100,000 FREE smoke alarms in at-risk neighborhoods from April 27 - May 12 in an effort to reduce the number of injuries and deaths due to home fires. As part of this effort, the American Red Cross- Rhode Island Chapter along with partners are aiming to install 1,000 smoke alarms in Providence and surrounding communities on Saturday, May 11 from 8 am-2 pm.

There is no income requirement. Anyone can sign up. Please spread the word. Last year over 1,000 smoke alarms were installed in RI in one day! Best part, all FREE!

April is Autism Awareness month. So, beginning April 1st, 2019, the North Smithfield Police Department will be selling Autism Awarenes Police Patches. The patches will cost $10.00 each and the proceeds will be donated to The Autism Project located in Johnston, Rhode Island. Please show your support by purchasing an Autism patch. Patches can be purchased at the North Smithfield Police Department. We're always open, so stop by and get your Autism Patch and help us support this great organization. Check or money order only.

NORTH SMITHFIELD EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

One of our communites' greatest assets is its young people.

As part of the STEP program, helping students learn about dealing with disasters or local emergencies rounds out family preparedness.

This booklet, as a pdf document, can be printed out helping young people learn how they can help in an emergency.

Kids can help in many ways either by watching out for an elderly neighbor, shoveling snow as part of a neighbor help program, some communities have a CERT(community response training) in their local schools. Even though a CERT team requires those over 18 years of age, junior CERT teams in schools and villages have kids as young as 13 years of age.

It is never to late to learn emergency preparedness. Too many stories are seen on TV today where a 12 year old administered CPR to another young person or an adult. The nationwide “Stop the Bleeding Program" and “You are the Help Until Help Arrives" is being conducted in elementary schools across the nation to students in grade 4 and up.

Get involved and get your kids involved also. They are our future!

CANNED PASTA

Any donations or monetary gifts for the food pantry can be dropped off at the Slatersville Congregational Church between 9:00 am and noon. An additional drop box is available at the Town Hall during regular business hours.

Senior Services, Inc. has provided services to seniors and adults with disabilities residing in Northern Rhode Island since 1975, in accordance with the Congregate Meal Program financed through a grant with R.I. Department of Elderly Affairs. Senior Services, Inc. provides nutritionally balanced lunches five days a week at our meal sites throughout Northern R.I.

Senior Services, Inc. offers activities, entertainment, computer classes, Alzheimer's Disease Support Groups, and Wellness programs, which include a weekly blood pressure clinic and exercise classes.

Senior Services, Inc. also offers an Adult Day Care Program ("A Home for the Day"), and a Community Information Specialist who can provide information on eligibility for all state and local programs, including RIPAE.
