City Council Special Meeting - Oct 15 2024

President Trump says the U.S. is "locked and loaded" if Iran kills protesters. Demonstrators have been filling the streets of Tehran since Sunday, when Iran's currency hit a record low, with some calling for regime change. Trump posted on Truth Social early this morning that if peaceful protesters die, the U.S. "will come to their rescue."        The new year means the expiration date is here for Affordable Care Act subsidies, leaving over 20-million Americans facing higher health insurance costs. Congress allowed federal tax subsidies to expire at year's end, but the fight will pick up when Congress returns next week. Millions of people are expected to drop their health insurance because of the price hikes.        Rampant fraud allegations within Minnesota's social services programs will be the focus of the House starting next week. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer set the first hearing for Wednesday. Comer has also invited Minnesota's Governor Tim Walz and its Attorney General Keith Ellison to testify on February 10th. Walz's office issued a statement said the governor is "happy to work with Congress," while also pointing to the committee's track record for holding what he called "circus hearings that have nothing to do with the issue at hand."        The FBI says a possible ISIS-inspired New Year's Eve terrorist attack in North Carolina has been thwarted. The FBI says Christian Sturdivant was planning on attacking customers in a grocery store and fast food restaurant using hammers and knives. Sturdivant turned 18 in December and is a U.S. citizen and resident of a town outside Charlotte.        U.S. pressure might be working on Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro, who now says he's ready to talk with the U.S. about drug trafficking. In a recent interview, Maduro said if the U.S. wants to "talk seriously about an agreement to combat drug trafficking, we are ready." The U.S. has been targeting what officials say are Venezuelan drug boats for months, and recently conducted a strike on a Venezuelan dock -- a question Maduro would not comment on during the interview.        BTS will make their big return to music this year. The K-Pop superstar group has been on hiatus since 2022 while band members completed their military obligations in South Korea. In a post on X, the group's agency BigHit said, "March 20th comeback confirmed." Members have been teasing for months that new music and a tour are in the works.
