City Council Special Meeting - May 20 2024

Protests are underway after an ICE-involved shooting left a woman dead in Minnesota. Homeland Security claims the woman was protesting ICE when she rammed her car into federal agents and was shot. But the Democratic mayor of Minneapolis disputes that, saying the woman was fleeing the scene. This comes just as DHS deployed over two-thousand ICE agents to the Twin Cities in what it is calling the "largest DHS operation ever."        President Trump says Venezuela will only purchase American-made products with the money they get from a new oil deal. Trump took to Truth Social to say they will include agricultural products, medicines, medical devices and energy equipment, among other things. It comes following news the U.S. has seized two Venezuela-linked oil tankers, and that the country will turn over 30 to 50 million barrels of oil to the U.S.        Democratic Congresswoman Summer Lee is pushing back against the House inquiry into Minnesota's social services programs. Lee and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer got into a heated exchange on Wednesday during a Capitol Hill hearing focused on fraud in the state. The congresswoman alleged that Republicans "cherry picked a blue state and an immigrant population" to "demonize." In response, Comer accused Minnesota state lawmakers of failing to identify fraud and Lee fired back at the chairman with her own allegations of Republican failures.        A man who committed a 2001 school shooting in California may get out of prison soon. Charles Williams shot and killed two students and injured 13 others at Santana High School when he was 15. He was sentenced to 50-years-to-life in prison, but a judge erased his life sentence after his case was moved to juvenile court. The 39-year-old expressed deep remorse for his actions and says he wants to live a life of service. Prosecutors plan to continue to fight against this in higher courts.        Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is changing the dietary guidelines for Americans. Kennedy's plan aims to completely cut out added sugars, prioritize protein, push vegetables and fruit, reduce the intake of highly processed products, eat more whole foods, and end the war on saturated fats. He says with his announcement, the old lies from the government about what are healthy foods stop. The new guidelines will impact the food fed to American children in school and meant to combat chronic disease in the U.S.        The NFL is seeing its highest regular-season viewership since 1989. The Sports Business Journal reports games averaged nearly 19-million viewers in 2025. The increase represents a ten-percent jump from 2024, boosted in part by Nielsen's expanded measurement of out-of-home viewing. CBS, NBC, and Prime Video each recorded their best full-season average audiences, while Fox delivered its strongest season since 2015. ESPN finished with its second-best season, trailing only 2023, when many Monday Night Football games were simulcast on ABC.
