AARP Rhode Island Appoints New State President Elizabeth Howlett (formerly Roberts) assumes leadership role

 

PROVIDENCE – AARP Rhode Island State Director Catherine Taylor today announced the appointment of Elizabeth Howlett as State President.

“We are delighted that Elizabeth has stepped into this key volunteer leadership position,” Taylor said. “Her experience, her expertise, her distinguished leadership history, and her passion for our mission make her an outstanding choice.

“I look forward to working closely with her to make a positive difference in the lives of older Rhode Islanders,” added Taylor.

Howlett (Elizabeth Roberts) has had a lengthy career in policy and program development, with a particular focus on health and on quality of life for older adults.  After working in health care financing and consulting early in her career, she entered public service, serving ten years as a State Senator and, subsequently, two terms as Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island.

“I am pleased and honored to take on the role of volunteer State President for AARP Rhode Island,” said Howlett.  “Working in partnership with State Director Catherine Taylor and her team and the many volunteers who are leading us forward will be a privilege.  I especially want to thank Marcus Mitchell who has been a strong leader during the past two years.

“I am excited to continue Rhode Island’s progress in many of the areas that AARP Rhode Island has prioritized -– improving housing options, building a future of economic security, strengthening our livable communities --- and accomplishing these goals with the support of a group I am proud to be a part of, AARP volunteers.”

Governor Gina Raimondo appointed Howlett as Secretary of Health and Human Services in 2015. Following her service as Secretary, Elizabeth supported programming that developed health policy and advocacy at The Milbank Memorial Fund and consulted with Rhode Island organizations as they developed strategic plans, and worked to strengthen their administration and programming. 

In the spring of 2020, she joined the University of Rhode Island as the Director of the Academic Health Collaborative, focusing on the expansion of interprofessional education and collaborative research across the Colleges of Nursing, Health Sciences and Pharmacy. She recently retired as Director of Special Projects for the Provost at URI, with responsibility for the development and implementation of new initiatives.

Howlett currently serves on the boards of directors for One Neighborhood Builders, a nonprofit housing developer, and Aldersbridge Communities, which provides affordable assisted living and skilled nursing care. She graduated from Brown University and earned an M.B.A. in Health Care Management from Boston University.

President Trump says the tariffs imposed on other countries are having the desired effect, and he's now open to negotiations. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said his initial tariff plan is over, and he's watching it settle in. He said every country has called, asking to cut a trade deal with the U.S. to avoid the tariffs.        Stocks are closing sharply lower one day after President Trump announced sweeping global tariffs. The S&P 500 had its worse day since 2020 as the White House announced a baseline tariff rate of ten-percent against most countries yesterday that will go into effect on Saturday. At the closing bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 16-79 to 40-545. The S&P 500 lost 274 points to 53-96. The Nasdaq lost 10-50 points to 16-550.        A multi-day severe weather event is unfolding for more than 55-million people. It comes after at least seven people were killed in the South Central U.S. after storms that included several tornadoes hit the region yesterday. Tonight, there is still a tornado threat for the same areas, but forecasters warn there could also be potentially catastrophic flooding in the Mid-South and Midwest.        The Federal Aviation Administration is offering more support to air traffic controllers at Reagan National Airport. The Critical Incident Stress Management team will be meeting with airport personnel sometime early this month. The FAA is also reviewing the arrival rate at the airport and will conduct regular wellness checks.        The Senate has confirmed Dr. Mehmet Oz as administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The television personality was confirmed on a party-line vote of 53-45. Oz now assumes a role that provides health insurance to roughly 160 million Americans.        Steven Spielberg and George Lucas top the latest Forbes list of celebrity billionaires. The latest Forbes ranking of the world's wealthiest people includes 18 celebrities, with film director Steven Spielberg topping the list at five-point-three-billion dollars. Star Wars creator George Lucas is in second place with a net worth of five-point-one-billion dollars.
