SBA to Host Woman-Owned Small Business Roundtable Discussion with Senator Reed and Lt. Governor Matos 

 

PROVIDENCE, RI— U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) New England Regional Administrator Mike Vlacich and Rhode Island District Director Mark S. Hayward will be joined by United States Senator Jack Reed, Rhode Island Lieutenant Governor Sabina Matos, and Secretary of Commerce Elizabeth Tanner in hosting a roundtable discussion with local woman-owned small businesses.  The discussion will focus on the challenges woman-owned businesses have faced in Rhode Island, as well as their successes. 

 

The roundtable is part of the month-long celebration of Women’s History Month, highlighting the achievements of the 33,000 woman-owned small businesses in Rhode Island.

Polls are closed in Virginia, where voters are choosing their next governor. Democrat Abigail Spanberger has maintained a double-digit lead over Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears. Voters in New Jersey have one more hour to vote for their next governor in the close race pitting Democrat Mikie Sherrill against Republican Jack Ciattarelli [[ CHIT-ah-relly ]].        Tonight's election for Virginia's attorney general has the attention of the White House and both parties nationally. The race was thrust into the spotlight after 2022 texts from Democratic nominee Jay Jones surfaced where he discussed the hypothetical murder of a Republican state lawmaker and his children. Jones apologized and stayed in the race, after President Trump and other Republicans urged him to drop out.        A UPS cargo jet exploded in an enormous fireball while taking off from Louisville's Muhammad Ali International Airport late this afternoon. The plane, UPS flight 2976, was en route to Honolulu and was carrying a large amount of jet fuel when it crashed. Eyewitness video shows the MD-11 wide-body jet rolling down the runway with flames shooting from the side of the aircraft.        Flags at the White House are flying at half staff following the death of former Vice President Dick Cheney. His family announced his passing today at the age of 84, saying in a statement that he died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease. The statement went on to pay tribute to Cheney as "a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing."        Government weather forecasters are issuing a relatively mild outlook for this November. Snow is likely to begin to fall in the North, portions of the South can see severe storms, and forecast suggest the presence of a La Niña will remain through the month. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center's precipitation outlook for November also highlights a higher confidence for a typical La Niña setup to take hold.        Chrysler is recalling hundreds of thousands of Jeep plug-in hybrid SUVs due to the risk of battery fires. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall applies to 228-thousand-221 Jeep Wranglers with model years 2020 to 2025 and 91-thousand-844 Jeep Grand Cherokees with model years 2022 to 2026. According to Stellantis, it is aware of at least 19 reports and one injury related to the recall.
