Two North Providence police officers indicted for embezzlement and tax fraud

An indictment, information, or complaint is merely an allegation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

 

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Attorney General Peter F. Neronha announced today that a Statewide Grand Jury has returned indictments charging one current and one former member of the North Providence Police Department with multiple felony counts, including embezzlement and filing false tax returns. The charges stem from an investigation by the Office of the Attorney General and the United States Department of Labor, Office of the Inspector General and Office of Labor Management Standards, into alleged embezzlement of funds of North Providence Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police.

 

On January 30, 2023, the Statewide Grand Jury returned a secret indictment charging former Lieutenant Dennis Stone with three counts of embezzlement over one hundred dollars and six counts of filing a false tax return. The Statewide Grand Jury also returned a secret indictment charging Detective Christopher Petteruti with two counts of embezzlement over one hundred dollars.

 

At a hearing on January 31, 2023, the secret indictments were unsealed, and the defendants were arraigned in Providence County Superior Court.

 

As alleged in the indictments, the defendants, as members of the executive board of the North Providence Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, used their access to union bank accounts to embezzle funds for personal expenses. It is alleged that as president of the local union, former Lt. Stone embezzled funds for personal use, including meals at a restaurant, online study materials for promotional purposes within the police department, and various retail purchases. It is also alleged that former Lt. Stone filed false tax returns for the 2015 through 2020 tax years, by failing to disclose and pay taxes on income received as a part-time waiter at Twin Oaks restaurant in Cranston.

 

It is further alleged that as treasurer of the local union, Det. Petteruti embezzled funds for personal use, by withdrawing that money in cash from ATMs, as well as spending union funds to gamble at Foxwoods casino.

 

The defendants are scheduled for a pretrial conference on April 12, 2023, in Providence County Superior Court.

 

 

The man accused of shooting two National Guard members on the streets of Washington, D.C. is now facing a murder charge. U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro announced the upgraded charge this morning following the death of Sarah Beckstrom. The other guardsman shot in the incident, Andrew Wolfe, remains hospitalized in critical condition. The suspect, an Afghan national who worked with the U.S. to fight the Taliban, is still hospitalized as well.        The holiday travel rush will pick back up today with Thanksgiving in the rear view. Forecasters are warning travelers heading home to be prepared for slow traffic and flight delays. Today, driving will be hazardous in parts of the Midwest and Northeast, where lake-effect snow will cause whiteout conditions and slippery roads.        President Trump says South Africa will not be invited to next year's G20 summit in the U.S. South Africa called the move "regrettable." The global forum of the world's largest economies held its annual summit in Johannesburg this year, and no high-ranking U.S. officials were in attendance due to Trump's claims that the white ethnic minority in South Africa are the victims of genocide.        Vladimir Putin says Russia is ready for "serious talks" about a Ukraine peace plan. The Russian president was in Kyrgyzstan Thursday and said the plan supported by the U.S. "can be the basis for future agreements." It was the first time Putin has spoken publicly about the peace plan since the U.S. recently started negotiating with Ukraine.        Small Business Saturday is tomorrow and the Small Business Administration is encouraging folks to take part. American Express created Small Business Saturday in 2010 to encourage people to support the nation's estimated 36 million small businesses. The SBA says "With the economy rebounding from forty-year high inflation, there's never been a better time to shop small in support of local businesses."        "Zootopia 2" is off to a huge start at the box office. The Disney animated film brought in a near-record 39-and-a-half-million in its opening day Wednesday. That's the third-best opening day ever for a Disney animated film behind Moana 2 and Frozen 2.
