Speaker Shekarchi to host author Douglas Brinkley at State House

 

STATE HOUSE – At the invitation of Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi, author Douglas Brinkley will give a lecture at the State House today on his 2022 book, Silent Spring Revolution: John F. Kennedy, Rachel Carson, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, and the Great Environmental Awakening.

The lecture will take place today, Thursday, January 26 at 3:00 p.m. in the House Lounge (second floor) of the State House. The event is free and open to the public, but due to space constraints, those interested in attending are asked to RSVP to emartineau@rilegislature.gov.

Douglas Brinkley is an author, history commentator for CNN, Presidential Historian for the New York Historical Society, and a contributing editor to Vanity Fair magazine. His recent book Cronkite won the Sperber Prize, while The Great Deluge:  Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast received the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award.

The meeting will be televised live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox on Channels 15 and 61, in high definition on Cox Channel 1061, on channel 15 on i3Broadband and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers. The huge parade through Washington, DC is being held on Flag Day, which is also Trump's 79th birthday. Protests against the parade are planned in over 18-hundred communities, and up to a million people are expected to show up. One of the organizers of the protests said this week that "the most patriotic thing you can do" in the U.S. this Saturday "is to show up peacefully and petition your government for something better."        >>Sean "Diddy" Combs Sex Crimes Trial Resumes        (New York, NY) -- A former personal assistant to Sean "Diddy" Combs says he would take a day sometimes to prepare a "king night" for him at hotels. The assistant said they would prepare food, clothes, condoms, lubricant and red lights when asked to do so. It comes as after a special agent testified about the guns and bottles of baby oil that were taken from Combs' Los Angeles home. Meanwhile, Kanye West was briefly at the courthouse in support of Diddy, but left before actually entering the courtroom. Combs has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and other charges.        >>10 Dead From Flood Waters In Texas        (San Antonio, TX) -- Heavy flooding in Texas has claimed at least ten lives. That's according to the city of San Antonio and police say others are still unaccounted for in the city. Authorities responded to early morning calls yesterday from people stranded on a road, where 15 vehicles had gone into an adjacent creek. Firefighters rescued ten people from trees about a mile downstream. It came as heavy rains hit parts of Texas, with San Antonio getting more than five inches of rain in just three hours. This weekend, the flood threat is shifting towards Louisiana, Arkansas and Tennessee with severe storms possible as well.        >>Four Detainees At Newark Immigration Facility Have Escaped        (Newark, NJ) -- Police in New Jersey are searching for four people who escaped from an immigration detention center. Homeland Security said the detainees were being held at the Delaney Hall facility in Newark. ICE is holding people there who are facing potential deportation. Officials said the four were unaccounted for last night and it's unclear if they are still on the grounds or have left the area. Delaney Hall was the site of protests last month and where Democratic Congresswoman LaMonica McIver was charged with assaulting federal officials.        >>NBA Finals Game 4 Tonight        (Indianapolis, IN) -- The Indiana Pacers will look to take a commanding three-games-to-one lead in the NBA Finals tonight. The Pacers will host the Oklahoma City Thunder in game four of the series. Indiana took the series lead with a 116-107 win over the Thunder on Wednesday.
