Message from Town Administrator

Gary Ezovski

I hope the work to restore and paint all exterior trim that is being performed by Martone Painting Company is being noticed by all who pass by Town Hall of late. When I started as the administrator in December of 2016, I viewed the building more closely and noticed how the wood around the entrances and the trim at the roof line was deteriorating and needed to be painted. The change that is happening as the workers have taken admirable care to prepare surfaces and begin to apply paint is making quite a difference. The work is expensive, but it certainly will be cheaper in the long run to have all the wood cleaned and protected again instead of having it fall to rot and need replacement. By restoring and painting now our target is ultimately to get the best value for the tax dollars that are spent. We hope to be leaving this building for a renovated Kendall Dean at some point soon, but when we do, we plan to have our Memorial Building in a condition that allows it to continue as one of Slatersville’s iconic structures.

TOUR OUR TOWN'S 60 HISTORIC CEMETERIES

The NS Heritage Association will begin offering tours of our Town's 60 Historic Cemeteries promptly at 9:00 AM on Saturday, July 7th. Tours will last no more than two hours. The first tour will include the 5 cemeteries that form the Union Cemetery Annex, Union Cemetery and the Friends Church Cemetery across the highway.

A copy of the upcoming tours can be accessed by CLICKING HERE. You can check the RI Historic Cemetery database for lot names, descriptions and graves at http://rihistoriccemeteries.org/newsearchcemetery.aspx. Just click on the drop down menu and click on North Smithfield. Some lots are contingent on landowner permission to access.

We will be in shade most of the time but participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and bring sunscreen, insect spray and at least one bottle of water. Please RSVP to me if you plan to attend. We will limit participation to the first 25 people to reply.

For this tour, four have already signed up. We ask participants to please enter Union Cemetery at the center entrance across from the Friends Church and turn left onto the dirt road along the stone wall. Park behind the car in front of you. Walk ahead to the tree line where we will gather for the tour.
