TOWN NEWS

Message from Town Administrator

Gary Ezovski

It certainly has been a stressful week in North Smithfield with the impact of back to back storms.  Many have managed to get through two or three days of power loss on the weekend and then another day or more between Wednesday and Friday.  Let's hope we have seen the last of these events for a while.

Over the entire period our police, fire and DPW personnel responded to many urgent needs to guard against accidental contact with downed wires, clear trees from blocked roads and communicate our conditions to National Grid personnel.  Their work coupled with the determined crews from National Grid, Stanley Tree and others working for National Grid erased the effects of mother nature's seemingly unlimited power in what amounted to a matter of hours.  We can all find something to comment upon as it relates to our utility services, but I hope we can recognize how much of a challenge it is to have the people, equipment and materials available to handle hundreds of unknown events in a matter of hours.

From the triage that Grid leaders do to establish the order of the work to be done, to the people in the bucket trucks, the police and fire personnel who were first on many scenes, the plow drivers and chain saw operators (some being both) who were around town for as much as 32 straight hours, thank you for all your work.  We got hit hard twice, we got back up and to the best of my knowledge there were no injuries.

Sharing thoughts on how our systems can be better is something we must do, so if people have suggestions on how we in town or National Grid can do better, please let us know.  Whether people call with a smile or a grumble, we benefit from the information because we cannot fix what we don't know has happened and there are ideas out there that we don't already have.  During a storm or long after, your comments help us to help you.

A REMINDER:

Gusto's Pizzeira, Quick Stop Deli, One on One Hair Salon, and Slater Clothing Co. are all open for business during the Stone Arch Bridge closure.

While we encourage support for every local business, our hope is to do all we can to sustain "downtown Slatersville" during this difficult year.
