Key Dates Announced for Qualifying Quiz and Competition for TV

PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND (August 24, 2017) - It's the newest opportunity for Rhode Island high school students to vie for the glory of a championship title. WSBE Rhode Island PBS today announced the key dates for High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island®, its team-based single-elimination competition among qualifying high school students.

Team registration by school principals or academic coaches opens on Monday, August 28 at noon, and continues through Friday, September 29 at 2 p.m. All Rhode Island public, private, or parochial high schools are eligible to participate in High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island. The first step is to register a team of four currently enrolled students and at least one adult coach. Complete rules and frequently asked questions, as well as the link to the online registration form, are available at ripbs.org.

"As summer winds down and thoughts turn back to classes, we extend the invitation now so principals, academic coaches, and students can plan their strategies and participate," said Rhode Island PBS President David W. Piccerelli. "We invite all Rhode Island high schools to consider this opportunity to build school and community spirit, while celebrating academic excellence."

The qualifying quiz will be administered on Sunday, October 15, to the first 24 teams that register. Dubbed "Super Sunday," this event simulates the rapid-paced game show format, with all 24 teams competing separately. The eight highest scoring teams from Super Sunday will advance to a seven-round, bracketed, single-elimination competition, held over two days on Saturday and Sunday, November 11 and 12. The seven rounds will be taped for broadcast on Rhode Island PBS in the spring of 2018.

"We are hard at work assembling the right elements to make this a valuable experience and exciting contests for the students, the schools, and their circles of family and friends, as well as our broader community of viewers," said John H. Smith, the show's producer. "We are looking forward to producing great local television and cheering academic achievement."

Qualifying guidelines, dates for both the qualifying quiz event and competition weekend, testing resources, and other relevant information about High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island for school administrators, academic coaches, and students, as well as information about corporate sponsorship opportunities, are available online on the Rhode Island PBS Web site, ripbs.org.

Former President Trump will return to court this morning in New York as jury selection in his criminal trial continues. As of now, seven jurors have been chosen. A panel of 12 along with six alternates must ultimately be selected.        A widespread 911 outage that affected multiple states appears to be almost over. Authorities say residents in parts of Nebraska, Nevada, South Dakota and Texas were unable to call the number on Wednesday. Police say the service was finally restored late Wednesday night in Nevada and South Dakota and early this morning in parts of Nebraska. However, the outage is still impacting parts of Southern Texas.        The Republican-controlled Arizona House of Representatives stopped another attempt to repeal the Civil War-era abortion ban. The House on Wednesday voted not to discuss a bill Democratic lawmakers introduced on the floor. At the moment, the earliest the ban could be enforced is early June.        The White House is praising the U.S. Senate for dismissing two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. A White House spokesperson said Wednesday that the Senate has "rightly voted down this baseless impeachment that even conservative legal scholars said was unconstitutional."        A tsunami alert has been issued after a volcano erupted on a remote Indonesian island. Indonesia's volcano agency says hundreds of villagers have been evacuated after multiple eruptions on Ruang Island, where the volcano has been spewing lava and ash plumes thousands of feet into the air. Officials say the volcano has erupted at least five times since Tuesday night, and they fear it could partially collapse into the water and cause a tsunami like it did in 1871.        The Justice Department is paying over 100-million dollars to the victims of Larry Nassar. The Wall Street Journal reports the department agreed to make the payment as compensation for the FBI's mishandling of the investigation into the former USA Gymnastics team doctor. Over 500 women were abused by Nassar during his time working for USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University.
