Halliwell Review Committee

Hello Residents!

As many of you know the Halliwell Review Committee is getting well underway to gather all thoughts and ideas from community members on what to do with the Halliwell property. We are beginning by distributing a simple survey for everyone to fill out. There are no wrong answers, and everyone is allowed to fill it out individually, with family members, neighbors, or however else you'd like to brainstorm. This will serve as a starting point for the committee to hear what people are thinking about.

This will not be the only opportunity to have your voice be heard. We have tentatively scheduled our public charrette for July 24, so keep an eye out for more details to come. We are also requesting that boards and commissions begin to brainstorm as well, so please feel free to attend any meetings where you may see it on an agenda.

We look forward to hearing and reading all the ideas that are out there, and working collaboratively with everyone to achieve a very successful outcome, whatever that may be!

Thank you all very much for taking the time to fill out the survey in advance.

Great Road to Go Down to One Lane for

Union Village Railroad Bridge Replacement

in North Smithfield

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will take the Union Village Railroad Bridge in North Smithfield down to one lane with alternating direction controlled by a temporary traffic signal on each side of the bridge starting on Friday night, May 14. The traffic change allows RIDOT to begin replacing a portion of the bridge which carries Great Road over the Providence & Worcester rail line between Lapre Road and Meadowbrook Drive.

RIDOT expects moderate travel time delays but will monitor traffic conditions and adjust the traffic signal timing to minimize waiting at the light. The temporary traffic pattern also will prohibit access to Lapre Road at Great Road, but a signed detour will be established at the next side street, Hillview Avenue, to allow access to homes in this neighborhood.

The $5.2 million project for the Union Village Railroad Bridge will replace the structure in phases. RIDOT will demolish and replace the west side of the bridge first. In approximately six months, the Department will shift traffic onto the newly built portion so it can demolish and replace the eastern side of the bridge. Two-way traffic will be restored in summer 2022 and the entire project done in summer 2023.

The Union Village Railroad Bridge is 89 years old and structurally deficient. It carries 13,200 vehicles per day and is a popular route for travel to and from neighboring Woonsocket. RIDOT is using accelerated bridge construction methods with pre-cast concrete bridge components to shorten the duration of construction by several months.

The May 14 date is dependent on utility coordination, and if necessary would be postponed one week to Friday night, May 21.

All construction projects are subject to changes in schedule and scope depending on needs, circumstances, findings, and weather.

The Union Village Railroad Bridge Project was made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.

Testimony is resuming this morning in former President Trump's criminal hush money trial. Former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker is expected to take the stand again. The trial is expected to last four to six weeks. The judge in former President Trump's hush money trial is reserving decision on whether or not Trump violated a gag order. A hearing to determine if Trump has violated his gag order was held this morning before testimony in the trial resumed. After arguing Trump is "being very careful to comply" with order, the judge told the lawyer he's "losing all credibility with this court."        Tensions are high on a growing number of college campuses as protesters continue to call attention to the crisis in the Middle East. Demonstrators at Columbia University say they want the Ivy League school to divest from companies they say profit from Israel's violations of international law and Palestinian rights. As the protests spread, a number of arrests were made yesterday at Yale as well as New York University. Demonstrations also took place on the West Coast, with police reporting a large gathering on the campus Cal Poly Humboldt.       A search is underway for a former police officer accused of killing his ex-wife and underage girlfriend in Washington state. That's according to the New York Post. Elias Huizar is accused of killing his ex Amber Rodriguez at the elementary school where she worked on Monday and a second victim, identified as a 17-year-old he had been dating, was found dead near the school shortly after. The alleged murders took place on the same day Huizar was set to appear in court for allegedly raping two 16-year old girls.        The case of an Arizona rancher accused of killing a migrant on his property is being declared a mistrial. George Kelly was being charged in the shooting death of a Mexican man, who was crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in the Nogales area illegally in 2023. After over 15 hours of deliberations, the judge declared a mistrial Monday.        Eminem is celebrating his 16th straight year of being sober. On Saturday, the Detroit rapper took to Instagram to talk about the milestone. He posted a photo showing his new silver Alcoholics Anonymous coin in the palm of his hand. The "16" coin means Eminem hasn't touch a drop of alcohol or any other type of drug in 16 years.
