FREE TREES AVAILABLE, JUST IN TIME FOR SPRING PLANTING

Registration opens April 5 for popular Energy-Saving Trees Program,

which helps Rhode Islanders save energy and money

 

 

PROVIDENCE - The Department of Environmental Management (DEM), in partnership with the RI Tree Council, RI Nursery and Landscape Association, and the Arbor Day Foundation, is providing 1,000 free trees to Rhode Island residents this spring.  Now in its 12th season, the program helps Rhode Islanders save energy and lower their utility bills by strategically planting trees on their property. 

 

"We’re pleased to join with the Arbor Day Foundation and local partners again this spring to offer free trees to Rhode Islanders,” said DEM Director Janet Coit. “Planting a tree in the right place is a tangible way for residents to stand up to climate change and can improve air quality, sequester carbon, and help manage stormwater runoff. Most trees are spoken for within days of registration opening, so be sure to register early!”

 

Planting the right tree in the right place is the key to maximizing the energy-saving benefits that trees provide. When planted properly, a single tree can save a homeowner money on energy costs by shading their home in the summer and blocking cold winds in the winter. This season, nine different tree species with variety of mature sizes will be distributed.  Available species will include Allee elm, American hornbeam, black tupelo, eastern hophornbeam, eastern redbud, Exclamation! London planetree, 'Frontier' hybrid elm, Okame cherry, and white oak.

Registration opens on Monday, April 5, and is required to reserve a tree. Recipients must be Rhode Island residents. Supplies go fast, so early registration is recommended.  Follow these steps to reserve your free tree:

 

1.      Sign up at www.arborday.org/RIDEM and map out your house by using the interactive mapping tool

2.      Select the right tree by choosing from a list of approved trees

3.      Reserve your tree by choosing from a list of pick-up locations (listed below)

 

The free trees will be approximately four to six feet tall and come in three-gallon containers. These trees are traveling size and will fit in most cars for you to take home and plant yourself.

DEM reminds Rhode Islanders that they must wear face coverings and practice social distancing while at the tree pick-up events.  DEM advises everyone to follow current guidance about COVID-19 from the Rhode Island Department of Health. Opening statements are expected Monday in former President Trump's criminal trial in New York. The six alternate jurors have been seated and the 12 jurors are already in place. The former President is accused of falsifying business records in order to cover up payments allegedly made to an adult film star just prior to the 2016 election.       New York police say the man who set himself on fire outside the Donal Trump trial drove from Florida to New York City earlier this week. The man had some papers with him that detailed conspiracy theories involving local politics. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.       President Biden is taking jabs at Donald Trump while rallying union workers in Washington, D.C. Biden delivered remarks at an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers conference on Friday, where he said some people, including Trump, "learned the best way to get rich is inherit it." He also said those people " learn that paying taxes is for working people, not the super wealthy."        The House is expected to vote for final passage of House Speaker Mike Johnson's foreign aid package over the weekend. The House approved a rule vote today to begin debate on individual bills to provide military aid for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan. In an unusual move, Democrats voted with Republicans to advance the legislation as many conservatives voted no.        The FAA and United Airlines are investigating a video that appears to show a Colorado Rockies staff member in the cockpit during a flight. The incident happened during the team's April 10th chartered flight from Denver to Toronto. In the video posted on social media that has since been deleted, an unauthorized person appears to sit in the pilot's seat. United Airlines says at least two pilots have been removed from the job.       Horror film "Abigail" is looking to take the top spot at this weekend's box office. It's expected to make between 12-million and 15-million-dollars in its first weekend. "Abigail" is expected to just beat out last week's winner "Civil War" for first place.
